ABOUT THE EVENT
Get inspired by the potential of design to enhance and reimagine historic places of worship on this one-day study tour of three distinctive projects in east London. You will have the opportunity to explore different approaches to supporting community activities and engagement, see the design changes that have been made to accommodate them and meet with some of the people involved in managing these places.
WHAT THE GLASS-HOUSE WILL BE DOING
The tour will be led by the core delivery team of the 5-year Empowering Design Practices research project – The Glass-House and the Open University’s Design Group.
At Bromley-by-Bow Centre, we’ll learn about how a church opened up its site to become a pioneering neighbourhood hub that includes a medical practice, cafe and community services supporting families, young people and adults.
At St Paul’s Bow Common, which is widely regarded as the most significant post-war church in Britain, we’ll see how the design of the church aimed to create an inclusive space that would support relationships between worshippers, and hear about the recent repairs to secure its future.
Finally, we’ll end our tour at St. Paul’s Old Ford, where an innovative reordering project created new floors to house community, educational and rehabilitation spaces and diversified the church’s role in supporting local people, enabling the church to become ‘A New Heart for Bow’.
