EVENT ORGANISED BY: The Academy of Urbanism

ABOUT THIS EVENT
On 11 November, join the Academy of Urbanism for the 2026 Urbanism Awards Learning Plenary — a chance to learn from exceptional places, exchange ideas with fellow urbanists and celebrate the people making a difference to our built environment.

After their October Learning from the Finalists webinars, The Academy of Urbanism will hold their Learning Plenary, where we’ll explore a question at the heart of this year’s Urbanism Awards: what makes a place joyful?

Through discussion with speakers from different disciplines, we’ll consider what urbanists can learn from exemplary projects and how those lessons can help shape better places in the future. The Joyful Places Panel will bring together Sarah Allan (MHCLG), Federico Cassani (Buro Happold), Duncan Laird (National Trust), and Dr Idrees Rasouli (ARU). Together, they’ll draw on their diverse expertise to explore what we can learn from this year’s finalists — and how we can put a little more joy into placemaking.

Across all four Awards categories — Streets+Space, Neighbourhoods, Town/Small Cities, and European Cities — the Plenary will offer another opportunity to go behind the scenes of successful projects with the people who shaped them.

WHAT THE GLASS-HOUSE WILL BE DOING
The Glass-House Chief Executive Sophia de Sousa will be moderating the Joyful Places Panel, having previously facilitated a session for the Academy of Urbanism which identified Joy as a new theme for judging in this year’s Urbanism Awards.
