About this Session
The increasing popularity of engaged, co-designed and co-produced action research, and particularly at the intersection of academia, practice and communities, is changing the nature of research outputs. This type of collaborative, interdisciplinary research challenges the traditional ways of not only producing, but also sharing knowledge, innovation and insight, as diverse partners find new ways to package what emerges from research.
In this session, we’ll look across the evolution of The Glass-House / Open University strategic partnership to explore how we have shaped our research, as well as the role that the various partners and communities engaged in the activities have played in informing, co-designing, co-producing and disseminating research outputs. We’ll look at the power of thinking beyond academic journal papers to consider how to make research findings more accessible, relevant and useful to people both within and outside academia.
Areas of Exploration
Themes we will explore in this session include:
- The spectrum of sharable outputs that engaged action research can produce.
- The role of diverse partners and contributors in shaping research, and the impact this has on what outputs are produced and how they can be disseminated.
- The opportunities and challenges of academics and practice and/or community-based partners co-authoring academic papers, teaching materials, practical resources and creative media to capture and share learning.

About Research Rooms
The Research Rooms series is a collaboration between national charity The Glass-House Community Led Design and The Open University’s Design Group. These events share learning, resources and anecdotes from the many research projects we have done together. In some sessions, we also invite others to co-host and share findings from their own projects, creating space for them to reach new audiences.
Research Rooms are informal online spaces for discussion with members of the research team from academia, practice and communities. Those attending can learn about the projects, their outputs and outcomes and the influence they have had on those involved. There is also space to share your own experience and explorations of the project themes.
